An Examination of Martin Scorsese’s Costumes

December 19, 2013 § 3 Comments

Like many directors, Scorsese keeps an interesting style continuity throughout his films.

GANGSTER THREADS IN GOODFELLAS

In Goodfellas he used costumer Richard Bruno, known for his wardrobe work in Chinatown, Raging Bull and The Untouchables.

This film follows the rise and fall of the Lucchese crime family over a period from 1955 to 1980. Bruno’s stand out pieces, in my humble opinion, were in the following scene.

Henry and Karen’s early years: A 70’s ensemble of a leather jacket, polyester slacks and a classic button down seemed fitting for setting things straight with a neighbor.

Karen didn’t seem to mind, dressed in innocent and girlish pink pleated pants with a matching wool cardie.

WALL STREET CON ARTISTRY

Being hailed as a close second best film of Scorsese’s according to one film critic, makes me yearn and ache to see this film so much more. It hits theaters on CHRISTMAS. But for now, let’s look at the garments provided by fashion house Armani.

Fuchsia mary janes, to die for.

Margot Robbie in a striped transparent black gown is sexy and it absolutely frames this new artists face. Isn’t she gorgeous? Can’t wait to see what this newcomer siren-on-the-screen has in store next.

Benicio Del Toro in THE WOLFMAN

My award for Best Man to Wolf Transformation Scene goes to Benicio Del Toro in The Wolfman. Watch this spoiler-filled-trailer in its entirety for this particular scene, it is freaking brilliant. That is all…

Ok ok ok, I have to add: Anthony Hopkins is amazing throughout the entire film, but that is to be expected.

Snow White & the Huntsman

Hey computer animation techs who engineered this movie, I cannot wait to see this total orgasm for the eyes on the silver screen. Just look carefully at the 3D computer graphics used to manipulate the birds to swarm furiously, the soldier to shatter with the strike of a sword and the infamous mirror on the wall that morphs into a draped figure. I’m sure it will make one hell of a big-screen-show.

UPDATE: It did horribly at the box office, and according to one critic, it didn’t live up to its awesome preview.

John Leguizamo

The Lincoln Lawyer is based on the best-selling novel by Michael Connelly in which a lawyer, played by Matthew McConaughey, does business from the back of a Lincoln Town Car representing a high-profile client.

The star studded cast includes John Leguizamo, Michael Peña (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), and Marissa Tomei.

Here’s a behind the scenes clip of Leguizamo talking about working the streets of Los Angeles as Val Valenzuela. [INTERVIEW CLIP]

And here he is in action.

The Lincoln Lawyer is in theaters now.

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez

For the first time in our film recollection, veteran filmmaker Robert Rodriguez appears in one of his films – his short about Kobe Bryant titled THE BLACK MAMBA.

The short film for Nike also stars Danny Trejo, Kobe Bryant, Kanye West, Bruce Willis and some wicked looking basketball beasts.

Here it is in its entirety. Enjoy!

The Sasquatch Gang

the sasquatch gang

Tim Skousen: the Assistant Director of Napoleon Dynamite has written and directed another glorious nerd drama, The Sasquatch Gang, a comedy about somewhat-normal teens in the semi-peaceful suburbs. They share the same nerd glory as Napoleon Dynamite and the film is just as funny, minus the classic “Vote for Pedro” storyline which will remain my favorite film memory for eternity.

During its tour through the film festival circuit, The Sasquatch Gang screened at Slamdance, HBO US Comedy Arts, Waterefront New Zealand, Sidewalk, and Vail Film Festivals winning a number of awards for Best Director and Best Actor to Justin Long.

The nerd pack consists of a few groups of kids that discover what they believe to be Sasquatch footprints and scheme ways to make money off of their discovery throughout the film. My favorite character was Sophie, a teen video store clerk who has her mouth wired shut to lose weight and all the nerd boys love her. Say what you will, there’s comedy in that. I thought it was hilarious.

Are you wondering why you haven’t heard of it? It didn’t get wide theater distribution, probably why I haven’t seen it until recently—it is now airing on Showtime. The trailer (below) doesn’t do it justice, but I highly recommend watching it.
